This year's internship at Roanoke Rapids High School has been one of the most profound experiences of the NELA program . I have engaged in the most practical hands-on experiences as an Administrative Intern in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. The leadership of Mr. Robert Hurley, a distinguished principal has further instilled in me the importance of committment, dedication, and reflection as a school executive. The three most vital characteristics I have learned from this tremendous experience are:

  • School leaders must be committed to excellence
  • Have strong ties to parents and the community
  • Be reflective as they work to design instructional programs and practices that meet the academic and social needs of all students

Accomplishments:
  • Accepted duties of assistant principal, including handling disciplinary referrals, parent contacts, conduct teacher observations and evaluations, work with students and teachers at the high school and middle school level to enhance student achievement, participate in the planning and implementation of professional development.
  • Organized 9th Grade Parent Registration Night, 8th grade orientation and quest speaking events at Chaloner Middle School
  • Director 8th/9th Grade Transition Academy responsibilities providing researched based instructional strategies to 22 teachers; provide direction to staff as liason between middle and high school principal
  • Collaborate with administrative staff at Roanoke Rapids High and Chaloner Middle School, teachers, and parents to engage in the school's mission and vision.
